A delicious, strong flavoured drink, with a hint of infused walnuts and cloves. Its subtle sweetness and spiced overtone make it a perfect drink for the cold Winter months. We have re-developed our British Walnut Liqueur over the last year or so and it is finally ready to try. Our 2018 vintage is smoother than our 2014 version, with a little less clove.
How is it best drunk?
Walnut Liqueur can be drunk as a digestif after an evening meal in front of a roaring open fire. It is excellent for drinking with cheese or a sweet dessert. Pouring over ice creams or sorbets can excite those puddings to dangerous levels!
As you can imagine we have been creating a few new cocktail recipes for this drink and would recommend you try our Solar Eclipse Cocktail which combines our Walnut Liqueur with our fiery Ginger Wine 14% to create a strong and very drinkable aperitif.
How is this made?
Experiments for our Walnut Liqueur started in June 2013 after we found a source of British Walnuts in East Sussex. Our kitchen table was used to develop a suitable recipe from which to create the drink we have today. It is based loosely on the Northern Italian drink, Nochino Liqueur. Success was found using Julian Temperley's very fine Apple Eau de Vie as the base spirit, when combined with British Walnuts and cloves. Walnuts ripen in early June and are traditional picked on 1st June, the Feast of St. John while still green. Due to a late Spring in 2014, we decided to pick on our 10th birthday, 1st July. An energetic few of the Demijohn Team from Oxford headed for the green and pleasant fields of East Sussex to pick and luckily it was the most glorious day. Blue skies allowed us to successfully pick over 40kg of the bright green nuts. The Walnuts were then sent to Julian in Somerset to be infused in his Apple Eau de Vie. The result was a refined and fantastic drink. It is was and still is the only British Walnut Liqueur to be made for sale in the UK. Since 2014 we have sought to make the drink better still and finally released a new vintage in Nov 2018. This story has only just begun and we hope you keep drinking and following it!
