Our Traditional Mead from Devon is a gentle, sweet honey wine. We have bottled our Traditional Mead 14% here as a miniature in our fun, squiggly shaped 100ml Fila bottle, a great bottle size for wedding favours and corporate gifts. As possibly the oldest alcoholic drink in the world, Mead was traditionally consumed at weddings, hence a possible source of the name, honeymoon.
How is this best drunk?
We believe that you can enjoy Traditional Mead on all occasions as an aperitif. In summer it is delicious chilled and can be served in the place of a pudding wine with cheese. In winter it makes a wonderfully warming mulled drink. Many cocktail and dessert recipes are possible using this deliciously smooth honey wine.
How is this made?
Our Traditional Mead, or Honey Wine is made from a simple blend of British honey, water and yeast by a small team of passionate individuals at Nigel Howard's West Country Winery in Devon. We should know as Frances and I went to visit them to see how it was done. Nigel, a retired banker who escaped the City in 1994 to make wine, uses both traditional and modern production methods to create some really unique drinks. Although Nigel has now retired from his Winery also, his artisan winery lives on.
