Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur became our founding drink in 2004, and is still very much a Demijohn favourite. Handpicked Brambles from the Scottish Borders, or Blackberries as they are known in other parts of Great Britain, are infused in Scotch Whisky to create a wonderful port like drink that is rich and fruity.
How is it best drunk?
Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur is delicious to drink after supper, especially with cheese, or in a hip flask to use as a nip when out walking in the hills. Its rich, full bodied, almost port like flavour makes is perfect for use in gravies and sauces for game and red meat dishes.
It is loved by whisky drinkers and non whisky drinkers alike.
How is it made?
There is a long history to this special drink, which was first made for us by two retired PE Teachers in their bath near Edinburgh! Our latest version of Bramble Scotch Whisky is made locally for us by the Bullard Family in Moffat in the Scottish Borders.
Using a mixture of Scottish brambles, some of which are picked by their own fair hands from their local Moffat hedgerows, Nick and Erin have created a most fabulous drink. Masses of real fruit is steeped in a Blended Scotch Whisky with a little sugar and magic to create the infused drink that we know as Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur.
Is there anything else I should know?
Combining our Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur and our Ginger Wine can make a cracking cocktail called a Fruity Highlander! Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur can also be used in food recipes such as our Sausages with red onion and bramble glaze recipe and our The very best Game Gravy recipe.
A little more history. The original producers of this liqueur, Robin and Derry Ford, gave up teaching to make liqueurs in their back yard in 1999. We first came across the Teachers and their drinks at a dinner party in 2004, where they had brought along their handmade creation as a present for the host. So good was its taste that it became our founding drink when we launched our first store in Edinburgh's Grassmarket.
Not only has Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur now become a permanent fixture of our own drinks trolley at home, it was once voted by the Scotland on Sunday as being amongst the top 100 liqueurs made in the world. Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur was also known as Brammle (pronounced bram-el), which translates from the old Scots as Bramble.
To create the latest version of this award winning drink we chose Nick and Erin Bullard who having founded The Moffat Distillery, are themselves already steeped in whisky!
